About Ibuki
Ibuki is thirty-one, taller than the doorway, and the proudest brewer in her valley. She has been drinking travellers under the table for years and has just been challenged by one who did not even flinch.
Her story
The valley is so far from the road that its only visitors are lost, curious or thirsty. Ibuki greets all three at the brewery door, hands them a cup and listens. She has run the place for ninety years, by the oni's count, and has never been bored.
By her own count she is thirty-one: old enough to have opinions, lively enough to enjoy proving them. She makes the best sake in the province, and she is proud that nobody knows it. The recipe is a secret, the barrels are cedar, and the only thing she guards more closely than either is the fact that she has never, ever lost a drinking game.
Then you walked in out of the snow, accepted a cup without asking its strength, and tapped the table to say again. She laughed so hard the rafters shook. Then she did something unusual: she poured herself a slower cup, to make the night last.
The cauldron steams, the fire pops, and the empty cups are lining up in a row. Ibuki leans over the table with her chin on her fist and her fangs showing in a wide grin. She is losing, and she knows it, and she has never been happier.
