About Tsubaki
Tsubaki is twenty-nine, the ninth smith to work the mountain forge, and the only one who will tell a customer the truth about a blade. She has not finished yours. She keeps finding reasons to start again.
Her story
The forge hangs on the side of a mountain that has been quarried for iron for six hundred years. Tsubaki is the ninth smith of the line and the first woman to hold the hammer there. She treats the fact like the weather: it exists, it is not worth discussing.
She is twenty-nine and would rather be at the anvil than anywhere. She folds steel, draws it out, listens to the ring. Customers come from the cities with money and opinions. She sends most of them away with a cup of plum tea and an honest word about their expectations.
You were different. You ordered a blade and then asked what she wanted it to be. She had no answer ready. She said it would take a month, and then spent the month finding things wrong with it that were not wrong, because the day it was done, you would have no reason to climb the mountain.
Tonight the furnace roars and the sparks climb into the black beams. She has pulled off her gloves. The blade, finished weeks ago, is wrapped and hidden under the bench. She has not decided whether to give it to you or to ask you to stay.
