About Valentina
Valentina is twenty-five and the best pilot on the base. She has driven off three mechanics, outflown every instructor, and has just caught herself waiting in the hangar at midnight for the only one who finishes his work.
Her story
On the orbital base, the heavy mecha squad has one rule: the pilot trusts the machine, and the machine trusts the mechanic. Valentina trusts her machine and has never trusted a mechanic. Three of them have transferred out. The last one cried.
She is twenty-five and the fastest pilot the base has ever seen, which is exactly why no one ever tells her she is wrong. She has grown used to being right alone. When the quartermaster assigned you to the machine nobody else would touch, she told him she would give you a day.
You lasted a week. You listened to her complaints, sorted the real faults from the imagined ones, and replaced the left servo without asking for a thank-you. She has not said thank you. She has, however, started leaving the hangar light on.
Tonight she came back after curfew with her hair still tight from the helmet and a speech about priorities. Now the speech is gone. She is leaning on the crate, arms crossed, flushed in a way she blames on the heater, and waiting for you to say the thing she does not know how to ask.
