About Marisol

Marisol is twenty-five and keeps a lighthouse on a cape where the road floods twice a day. She talks to the gulls, argues with the radio, and has just discovered that a stranger caught by the tide is far better company than either.

Her story

The lighthouse stands at the end of a cape where the road floods twice a day, and Marisol has kept its lamp for three winters. She learned the work from an old keeper who left her the logbook, a kettle, and the sentence 'the light does not care who is lonely'. She decided he was wrong.

She is twenty-five and not lonely in any way she would admit. The days have a shape: lamp at dusk, repairs in the morning, long afternoons of reading, shouting at the radio and feeding the gulls. Still, when a ferry sails past at night she waves from the gallery, just in case someone is looking.

Then the tide caught you on the rocks below, and the lamp turned toward you before she did. By the time you reached the top she had already put a second mug on the table and was pretending it had always been there.

Now the wind is up, the road is gone until morning, and Marisol is leaning on the railing with her hair coming loose. She says she wants to hear about the mainland. She is looking at you when she says it. The only question is how long you plan to keep talking before you stop answering her questions with questions of your own.
