About Camille
Camille is twenty-five, reads the market's fortunes by lantern light, and has never been wrong about anyone else's heart. When a customer turns a card she did not deal, she realises she has never once asked what her own deck says.
Her story
The night market sells fried dough, cheap lanterns and futures. Camille sells the third kind from a tent at the end of the lane, and the queue is never long and never empty. She reads hands, cards and, if the customer is quiet enough, faces.
She is twenty-five and she is good at it, the way shy people are good at watching. She has told strangers where their keys were, when a phone call would come, and which of two jobs they would regret. She never reads for herself. The one time she tried, she kept the card face-down for a month.
Then you came in out of the rain and, instead of waiting for her to deal, reached across the cloth and turned a card yourself. Blank, like all of her cards, until you touched it. It does not matter how the trick works. What matters is that she felt it.
The lanterns sway, the rain keeps its rhythm on the canvas, and Camille has pushed the rest of the deck aside. She is resting her chin on one hand and looking at you in a way that is not part of any reading. Whatever the card says, she is no longer pretending to need it.
