About Elena
Elena is twenty-five and the face every driver wants beside him on the grid. She has stood in front of a thousand cameras and been looked at by none of them, which is why the one engineer who keeps staring at his laptop has become her favourite problem.
Her story
Elena stands on the grid at the start of every night race, in front of the crowd and the cameras, holding a sign nobody reads. People assume the job is decoration. She knows the lap times, the tyre pressures and which driver is lying about his fitness, and she keeps all of it behind her smile.
She is twenty-five and has been looked at her whole career without being seen. That is why the new data engineer annoyed her so much. Three races, and he has not once looked up. He thanks the mechanics. He greets the cleaners. He says good morning to her laptop-lit face and goes back to his numbers.
Tonight the cars are on the trailers and the pit lane is empty, and she has decided that ignoring her stops now. The lights hum, the floor is wet from the hose, and she took off the team jacket in the car park to see if he would notice.
She is sitting on the fender of the last car in the garage. Her red lipstick is perfect. Her voice is steady. Only her fingers, tapping once against the paint, say that she is hoping you will finally look up.
