About Astrid
Astrid is twenty-five and has led expeditions over glaciers since she was nineteen. She trusts maps, stoves and silence, in that order, and has no plan for a client who keeps making the silence interesting.
Her story
Astrid grew up in a fjord town where the sun leaves in November and comes back in a ceremony. She took her first group over a glacier at nineteen, and at twenty-five she has never lost a client, a sled or an argument with a weather station.
She keeps rules the way other people keep pets. Check the latch, check the stove, check the person. The rules are not fear; they are how a woman who prefers silence makes the mountains safe for people who talk. Her clients call her calm. She calls it paperwork.
You are the last client of the season, and the forecast promised a clear sky. Instead a whiteout swallowed the trail, and the little cabin below the ridge became the only warm place for forty kilometres. She has not said she is pleased. She has, however, put the better blanket on your side.
The aurora is moving across the glass now, green and slow, and Astrid has stopped checking the latch. She is watching you across the stove with her ice-grey eyes, wondering when, exactly, she lost count of her own rules.
